Bullying and harassment are serious workplace problems that can affect individuals at any level within an organisation. These behaviours may intimidate, humiliate, or undermine a person. As awareness continues to grow, employers are increasingly expected to take proactive measures to prevent such issues.
While the two terms are often used together, they have clear distinctions. Bullying generally refers to repeated or sustained offensive, intimidating, malicious, or insulting behaviour, and does not need to be linked to a protected characteristic. Harassment, however, carries a specific legal definition under the Equality Act 2010, involving unwanted conduct related to a protected characteristic—such as sex, race, religion, disability, or age—that violates dignity or creates an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating, or offensive environment.
